Spymonkey is a comedy theatre company, creating and performing theatre, variety, site-specific work and cabaret work to tour in the UK and internationally. With roots in physical theatre, circus, street theatre and site-specific work, it creates dark, edgy theatre that lies “somewhere between Monty Python, the Marx Brothers and Samuel Beckett” (The Houston Chronicle).

Spymonkey has produced six pieces of theatre, touring to 17 countries and over 100 venues in the UK. Oedipussy (2012), directed by Emma Rice and written with Carl Grose of Kneehigh, was the company’s second mid-scale co-production with Royal & Derngate Northampton. In 2016 Spymonkey created The Complete Deaths, adapted and directed by Tim Crouch, which was seen by over 20,000 people in the UK, USA, Italy and Turkey.

Alongside Spymonkey’s performance work it is dedicated to training the next generation of professional comedy performers. It also works with the charity Phoenix Futures on ‘Find Your Funny’, encouraging people in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction to build their confidence, optimism and creativity. Spymonkey has been working with Hijinx in Cardiff since 2012, on projects mixing able-bodied and learning-disabled performers.
