Purposeless Movements

Birds of Paradise Theatre Company

Birds of Paradise Theatre Company’s artistic vision is of a culture where disabled artists are recognised for the excellence of their work, are celebrated for the stories that they bring to the stage, and are a vital part of Scotland’s artistic landscape. Led by Robert Softley Gale, Birds of Paradise is an accessible arts company that produces world-class productions and projects. It places disabled artists centre stage and develops future generations of disabled artists. The company also offers training and consultancy in disability arts. Birds of Paradise's own show, My Left/Right Foot - The Musical won multiple awards including a Fringe First in 2018 and Gale's work has regularly featured in the Unlimited Festivals.

Purposeless Movements is a visually stunning piece of dance theatre that riffs on the stories of four men with cerebral palsy: how it affects their lives, their masculinity and their movement. Funny, challenging and joyous in equal measure, Purposeless Movements fuses post-rock music, video, movement and text. The men tell us about their laughter, their inappropriateness and their tears. With razor-sharp intelligence, they explore how people with cerebral palsy are represented and look at the assumptions we make about others’ abilities.

Purposeless Movements is in Edinburgh as part of the Edinburgh International Festival.

Please note that the performance on 22 August is a relaxed performance.
