The Monster in the Hall

Citizens Theatre in association with the National Theatre of Scotland

TAG Theatre company started life as the touring arm of Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre. The company’s work is usually aimed at young audiences and it has a strong reputation, not just for its productions but also for its participatory projects. David Greig, the Scottish writer of The Monster in the Hall, is a highly respected and prolific playwright who has been commissioned by the Royal Court, the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, amongst many others.

The Monster in the Hall is best described as an indie comedy musical. The play centres on Duck Macatarsney, a feisty 16 year-old who cares for her biker dad whose multiple sclerosis is getting increasingly bad. Duke is a spliff-smoking, bike riding, heavy metal and horror movie loving, pizza-eating widower who has brought up Duck since the death of her Mother. The two are just about surviving when one morning Duke wakes up blind and Duck hears that Social Services are coming to take her away. As is the nature of farces, the action is fast and furious but the work is beautifully observed, cleverly constructed and very enjoyable. For promoters, the draw is new writing interspersed with song, a strong young central character which will identify with young audiences and work which touches on complex family issues.
