Edmund the Learned Pig
Fittings Multimedia Arts, Krazy Kat Theatre and The Royal Exchange Theatre
Fittings is a disability-led company making popular theatre characterised by directness, emotion and immediacy; and working with materials, performers and artists that reflect the UK’s diverse cultures. Experimental in their approach and promoting a dramatic language that explores the ‘aesthetics of access’, the company fuses different storytelling and performance styles with visual / tactile arts and sign language to uncover hidden histories.
A co-production with Manchester’s prestigious Royal Exchange and the Krazy Kat Theatre Company - well-established creators of innovative, imaginative and accessible visual theatre for young people that combines mime, dance, song, Commedia dell’ Arte, puppetry and sign language - Edmund the Learned Pig is a deaf-friendly musical play telling the story of a brighter than average pig who runs away to join the circus. Inspired by an unpublished poem by American author Edward Gorey and featuring wonderfully macabre original songs by Martin Jacques of internationally acclaimed group The Tiger Lilies, Edmund is a highly accomplished and uplifting show exploring the diversity of families and what it means to be different.
In the press
“The real joy of Edmund the Learned Pig is that it's a show unbound by conventional expectations” What’s On Stage
“The show's vaudevillian setting is enhanced by a deliciously decadent, accordion-heavy score, which seems to have been devised as a means of introducing young audiences to the thrill of Weimar-era floorshows” The Guardian
