Nikki & JD presented by Jacksons Lane

Nikki & JD are an acrobatic duo with unique skills in circus and contemporary dance. They aim to push the boundaries of acrobatics, dance and storytelling. They have worked with Barely Methodical Troupe, a leading UK circus company, and are Associate Artists at Jacksons Lane, London and Déda, Derby. Knot, their first show together, was selected by Crying Out Loud for its Circus Evolution Programme. It has toured to the prestigious CIRCa Festival in Auch, the Avignon OFF Festival and the Seoul Circus Festival.

One fateful night, Nikki & JD were asked to close their acrobatic duet with a passionate kiss. Instead, they found themselves in an awkward embrace: Nikki going for a kiss, JD jerking his head away – and the idea for Knot was born. They asked themselves: “Why do we keep getting asked to play lovers? Is that really what audiences expect every time a man and a woman move together?” With virtuoso performances, this work deconstructs circus traditions and explores prejudice with sensitivity. It asks what it means to be a gay man in a heterosexual world and a single 30-something woman in a society that expects motherhood and marriage.

This piece features dramaturgy by Ben Duke, who also presents Juliet & Romeo in Edinburgh Showcase 2019.

Knot is in Edinburgh as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Nikki & JD have taught acrobatic masterclasses and workshops to BA dance students, emerging circus artists, theatre groups, schools, community groups and many others. The workshops provide a sampling of acrobatic techniques, including handstands, floor acrobatics, partner balances, and group lifts and climbs. They teach people of all ages, from 7+, and offer family workshops for parents and children to learn acrobatic lifts together.

They also provide lectures sharing the results of their research conducted through JCRP II, with practical examples for students, professional artists and other sector stakeholders to learn from their approach to acrobatic movement. Referees are available on request.

Post-show talks are also available.
