Second Coming by Victor Quijada

Scottish Dance Theatre

Overview

Founded in 1986, Scottish Dance Theatre is now Scotland’s national contemporary dance company and is part of Dundee Rep Theatre. Under the direction of Fleur Darkin, the company is committed to producing excellent and daring work that is led by the power of the dancing body. Scottish Dance Theatre commissions the most exciting choreographers from all over the world to make bold new works on its committed team of outstanding and virtuosic dancers; while still placing accessibility and

inclusivity, in all senses, at the forefront of the company’s activities.

Scottish Dance Theatre commissioned Second Coming in 2012 from Montreal-based choreographed Victor Quijada, whose work fuses hip hop, classical movement vocabularies and a contemporary dance sensibility to create a striking movement signature. Heavily influenced by the Los Angeles street-dance culture Quijada grew up in, Second Coming takes urban dance into new and often humorous theatrical territory. SDT’s assured company of dancers pushes Quijada's choreographic signature to stylish extremes, performing with their trademark style, savvy and commitment. Quijada sets his world-acclaimed breaking style to a potent turntablist soundtrack of classical samples and cavernous soundscapes by DJ/composer Jasper Gahunia (AKA DJ Lil’ Jaz).
