Girls

Talawa Theatre Company, HighTide and Soho Theatre

Overview

Founded in 1986, Talawa is the UK’s primary Black-led touring theatre company; with more than 40 award-winning productions from African classics to Oscar Wilde behind it. Informed by the wealth and diversity of the Black British experience Talawa’s work is created by cultivating the best in emerging and established Black artists. Touring small and middle-scale productions across the UK and running MAKE - a year round artist development programme for Black practitioners - the company is committed to investing in talent, developing audiences and inspiring dialogue with and within communities, both nationally and internationally.

Created by Therese Ikoko (previously a participant in Talawa Writers’ Programme), Girls is a co-production with the HighTide Festival and Soho Theatre - each a major platform for new playwrights. Highlighting the girls in the headlines, as well as those that are left unnoticed, the play explores the plight of three best friends whose world is turned upside down when they are kidnapped from their village by Boko Haram. With a background in criminology, Ikoko worked with gangs, serious youth violence offenders and the young women affected by them to craft a funny and fiercely passionate play about enduring friendship, the power of imagination and the stories behind the headlines that quickly become yesterday’s news.
