The Paper Cinema's Odyssey

The Paper Cinema and Battersea Arts Centre Co-Production

Overview

Founded in 2004 by Nicholas Rawling with Imogen Charleston and Christopher Reed, The Paper Cinema creates unique, magical performances that combine the languages of animation, music, film and theatre to lead the viewer through a variety of stories. Intricate pen and ink illustrations are skillfully manipulated in real-time in front of a live video camera and projected onto the big screen alongside live music, which is integral to the work. With a readily transferrable DIY aesthetic, the company has performed in a diverse range of venues from village halls to major film festivals, arts centres and museums.

The Paper Cinema’s Odyssey is a vivid reinvention of Homer’s cornerstone of literature, staged with the company’s trademark beautiful illustration and masterful puppetry. Cinematic projection and cunning tricks transform a suitcase full of cutout puppets into an array of living characters and striking landscapes that Odysseus encounters as he returns home from the Trojan War. Immersing the audience in a dangerous and exhilarating journey through the high seas, The Paper Cinema’s Odyssey is a magical and resourceful piece of storytelling for all ages that frames Homer’s classic myth in a totally new and highly imaginative way.
